Over the years since personal computers have been around, it's
really interesting to see how technologies come and go and
then come back again. Many times what seems like a new idea
is really just a rehash of something that's always been around
with a slight twist and a new name. Back in the pre-Internet
dark ages (circa 1980s) there were bunches of folks, mostly
men, armed with a computer connected to several modems and
a bunch of phone lines - serving what was then called a BBS.
BBS was an acronym for Bulletin Board Service. BBS usually
served special interest groups, like model airplane builders
or comic book collectors who shared news, pictures and personal
experiences to other people with similar interests.
If you were cool, they would give you a number to their BBS
and you could dial-in and read their personal bulletins, check
out software, or find out about special events.
Everybody wants to be cool:
Unless you've just recently crawled out from under a rock
- you must have surely heard of MySpace.com or YouTube?
Many folks who don't participate in such online gatherings
as chat-rooms, blogs
(web log = blogs) and social networking sites, probably don't
understand what the hoopla is all about. I have to admit that
I was not a participant in many of these kinds of activities,
mostly because I'm always doing WORK on computers and I don't
have much time for online activities that are just for fun.
I didn't really check out all the action until I heard that
Google had purchased YouTube for 1.65 BILLION dollars.
Sheeeeeeees - YouTube must be cool.
MySpace.com and YouTube.com allows folks to share news, pictures
and personal experiences with people with similar interests,
only now with a broadband Internet connection you can share
video clips and music, etc. - to anyone, anywhere in the world.
Now, anyone with an Internet connection can broadcast themselves
all around the world.
That's cool.
But if you check out some of the material on these sites, you
run into a few problems. Right next to the girl with a site
dedicated to showing off her drawings of her favorite pony
is a young lady who is showing off a few pictures that we could
never describe in the pages of this publication. It is a downright
shame, but we live in a free society and a world that is dominated
by a sinful nature.
What's a Christian who loves Jesus and likes technology to
do?
Some say we should just unplug. Let all those nasty folks do
whatever they want to on the Internet, and all good Christians
can virtually drop out. (No pun intended)
I say phooey. With that attitude Satan wins, and an incredibly
powerful tool for spreading the Gospel is lost. Christians
need to have a louder voice on the Internet. Here's a way to
turn the volume up a bit:
Announcing the BETA release of jesusfreakcomputergeek.com.
Point your web browsers to that URL and create an account.
Upload your pictures, start a blog, upload that video of your
praise song special at church. It's your space on the web.
The Bible says that we should always be ready to give an account
of our Faith "always being ready to make a defense to everyone
that asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you" (I
Peter 3:15) - here's a place to do it 24/7.
You have an opportunity to glorify Christ with your own personal
account of what He's done in your life.
Now THAT's cool.
